What is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal energy is the thermal energy derived from the Earth’s core. With access, this energy is in unlimited supply. Hence, it can be classified as renewable energy. In application, geothermal energy can be used for electricity production using a turbine, basic domestic and commercial heating, and agricultural use.

Geothermal energy is crucial because it is a clean energy source with very low emissions and a small footprint available all year round. As the world gravitates towards low-emission energy sources, the popularity and investments in geothermal energy are aligned with this expectation.

The formation of geothermal sources occurs when water is in contact with heat from the Earth’s core, creating a reservoir. These reservoirs can be accessed by drilling wells to access the hot water and steam for use at the surface.

The Challenge

Solids can develop when the amounts of dissolved components in water surpass the solubility of a mineral. Scales are precipitated solids commonly encountered during geothermal exploration, extraction, and injection. These scales restrict the inner diameter of the well casing, minimizing production flow.

 

The Solution

BLUESPARK® technology is an electro-hydraulic tool that produces a 10,000psi shock wave using existing fluid in the well, powerful enough to break down scales in the well. Using a small amount of electrical energy, this engineered solution is reliable and efficient in tackling well scaling, reducing risk, and saving money on operations compared to conventional methods like milling, brushing, acidizing, etc.

Recent Success in the Geothermal Industry

In 2021, Blue Spark Energy held a geothermal trial in Japan. The scope of this trial included scale treatment in the injection zones of these wells to improve well injectivity.

 

The results:

  • The BLUESPARK® tool was successfully deployed and run in the hole.

  • After treatment, well injectivity improved by 12X, with 100% operation efficiency.

  • After BLUESPARK® treatment, surface injection pressures were significantly lowered, reducing the cost of operation.

  • The well was 6 years old, and it was brought back to within 5% of the original injection rates.

  • All operations were carried out without any safety incidents reported.

  • No Blue Spark Energy personnel were deployed during this operation.

  • Due to the success of this operation, the scope of work was adjusted to cover a ten-well campaign.

Blue Spark Energy identified the opportunity to form a joint venture with this company to maximize opportunities for both parties over the long term.

 
 
 
 
 

 Research & Development

We are continuing to make improvements to our technology, including increased pulse count (to 12,000 pulses) and a possibility to improve thermal rating for geothermal applications.

BLUESPARK® technology offers an instant, renewable, lower carbon footprint, lower cost operation, and outperforms traditional methods in the well intervention market. Eliminating chemicals and harmful materials makes the technology a safe and sustainable low-risk option for scale and fines removal in geothermal wells.
